From Miami To Midland, A. Chris Barton Leads The Way To “Puffs”

L.A. | The Atom

Midland Community Theatre has announced the April 25 opening its production of a 2015 comedy by Matt Cox called “Puffs.” It’s a story about an orphan named Wayne and his discovery that he has magical powers. Directed by A. Chris Barton, this parody of a popular series with similar themes addresses the struggle and value of a common, youthful hero fantasy.

“Everyone in the ‘Puffs’ cast is a heightened version of an archetype,” said Barton. “What makes this show so interesting is that it's a whole new perspective on a familiar story, told in a very slapstick manner. Each actor might play several different parts throughout the span of a single scene, and we, as an audience, have to be able to recognize that change through their body language and the addition of a single costume accessory.”

Though he was a quiet child, Barton first discovered his own love for theatre and storytelling by the time he was in high school in Miami, Florida. He was interested in the psychology behind human emotions and understanding differing perspectives through performance.

“In this world, it's important not to judge people without first trying to understand where they're coming from,” said Barton.

His first high school show was “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.” He went on to study at Nova Southeastern University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in musical theatre and another bachelor’s degree in theatre with a focus on directing. Barton worked professionally in Miami as an actor and director for over 20 years before moving on to teaching theatre at traditional schools. Among the dozens of shows he directed were several adaptations of Shakespearean classics.

“I love presenting older stories in new and exciting ways,” said Barton. “I have written annual adaptations of Shakespeare that involved audience participation in some way or another.”

Barton also enjoyed appearing onstage in roles such as the emcee in “Cabaret.” He went on to study theatre at the University of Montana, where he earned his MFA in theatre. There, he had the opportunity to design for film, TV, theatre, dance, and opera. Some of his favorite designs include an in-the-round “Spring Awakening” and “Machinal.”

“Acting is just one part of what I do, and I've been involved in hundreds of productions between performing, designing and directing,” said Barton.

He has had onstage roles in productions of “The Play That Goes Wrong” and “Rumors” in Midland, but Barton said he particularly enjoys cultivating the vision that brings a show from the page to the stage. He joined the staff at Midland Community Theatre three years ago as the scenic designer.

“I saw the position with MCT, and the potential for growth in the area drew me,” said Barton. “I wanted to be somewhere that I could help expand and nurture a love for theatre. I wanted to help create opportunity.”

Barton also began teaching courses in acting, theatre appreciation and practicum at Midland College and working on projection with the new LED wall at MCT. While gradually building the theatre program at the college, he became the director of education for MCT in August.

“We have been doing outreach, and we want people to think of Midland as a place to come for art and theatre. We perform at libraries and talk with schools to invite students. We had nearly 100 come out to see ‘Little Women’ at the library in March.”

Over 800 students were bussed in from schools in the region to see “A Midsummer Night's Dream.”

Barton said he likes taking on the task of putting a picture together and building connections in the community.

“I like encouraging actors to explore their characters. ‘Puffs’ is a comedy, but it has heartfelt, dramatic moments that reach the audience. I believe you have to be able to laugh with someone in order to empathize with them, and it pulls you into the story.”

The MCT cast will bring the exciting story of “Puffs” to the mainstage April 25 – May 10. Learn more at mctmidland.org.

“This is a great show for adults, young and old,” Barton said. “Whether you’re familiar with this story or it’s all new to you, come experience this wild roller coaster ride of magic and wizards!”
