Campbell Mace-Meador gears up for “Cinderella” summer adventure in Alpine

L.A. | The Atom

Once upon a time, Campbell Mace-Meador was a choir kid in San Antonio. Then, she discovered her love of theatre as a teenager when she was cast in her first role in the musical “Into the Woods.” She has just completed her freshman year at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle studying for her BFA and participating in a musical theatre showcase called the New Works Festival. Now she’s packing her bags for a summer production of “Cinderella” as part of Theatre of the Big Bend’s 60th Anniversary celebration under the stars in Alpine, Texas.

Mace-Meador often attended productions at the Majestic Theatre in San Antonio and spent her years at Churchill High School developing skills in theatre performance.

“I had so much fun. I just fell in love with it and the friends I made in theatre,” said Mace-Meador.

She had onstage roles in “My Fair Lady,” “Joseph & The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” “Oklahoma!” and “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” before graduating in 2024. She also sang with the choir at Travis Park Church, where Lana Potts worked with the music team before joining the fine arts and communication faculty in her current position at Sul Ross University.

Potts suggested that Meador-Mace should audition for “Cinderella,” which required her to record her performance of a monologue and a song. She also sent a headshot and clips from previous roles she had played in musicals. Soon, she was called to schedule a Zoom meeting to read lines and talking with director Bret Scott about plans for her newest role as Ella.

Mace-Meador describes this character as a kind one.

“She sees the good in everyone. Ella has a strong sense of right and wrong,” said Mace-Meador. “She learns to become brave enough to stand up for the people around her in the community.”

During the rehearsals in June and throughout the performances in July, Mace-Meador will be living in Alpine. She said she is excited to meet lots of other creative people there.

“I am ready to meet the cast and production team! That’s my favorite part of theatre- meeting people and sharing an artistic vision,” Mace-Meador said. “It’s going to be such a fun show!”

Her advice to others who want to build a career in theatre is to devote time and space to it and learn as much as possible. Although it takes some determination and practice to cultivate any skill, she said one of her professors this year pointed out there is another way to look at it.

“It’s called a play for a reason,” said Mace-Meador. “You’re supposed to be having fun doing it.”

Performance dates for the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic fairy tale for all ages, “Cinderella,” at Theatre of the Big Bend include Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays July 5-20.
