D.G. Flewellyn: Music mastery is a matter of the heart
L.A. | The Atom
Lubbock music legend D.G. Flewellyn grew up hearing his parents sing in church and listening to his mother’s record collection. She introduced him to spiritual albums and voices like Aretha Franklin and Patti LaBelle. His grandmother was a friend of Ethel Waters. It was his grandmother who taught him how to be an outstanding cook and gardener, too.
His first onstage performance in a school production included a solo at age 10. He heard a variety of genres on the radio and became a fan of musicians such as James Taylor.
“I love the expression of emotion,” said Flewellyn. “Music opens the door for a conversation you can’t always understand how to have just sitting one on one.”
Other artists who influenced Flewellyn included Eric Clapton, Billy Joel and David Gates. After his graduation from Estacado High School, he studied at Texas Tech University and became a well-known vocalist, guitarist and classically trained percussionist. Over the past 48 years, he has performed with Acoustic Alchemy, the Flatlanders, David Halley and Sonny Curtis, to name a few. He has recorded and released four albums, and he was featured on Civic Lubbock’s 2020 Lubbock Music Now collection.
His unique sound that combines experience with rock, blues, jazz and country has been lauded by John Sprott, Lloyd Maines, Jesse Ballew, Stacy Bridges and many other local music collaborators and fans. Flewellyn is an award-winning musician honored by the Southwest Collection, Music Choice and ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) since 1993.
Flewellyn has also enjoyed mentoring musicians and passing on what he has learned over the years. His advice to young musicians is to cultivate and rely on authentic, practiced skill. Though computer apps and tools can useful, he advises against leaning on AI.
“Songwriting should come from your heart and soul,” Flewellyn said.
He also emphasizes the importance of learning the business end of the music industry.
Although he spends more time recording in the studio now, he also performs live at Lubbock venues like Abuelo’s, the Midnight Shift, McPherson Cellars, Two Docs and Tripple J Chophouse. This Friday, he will be at LaDiosa Cellars from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m.
“Come on out! It’ll be a good time to share good food, wine, live music and good company,” said Flewellyn.
